Meropenem is a β-lactam antibiotic that exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It readily penetrates the cell walls of most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against a wide range of pathogens. Except for metallo-β-lactamases, meropenem is highly stable against most β-lactamases.
Meropenem is indicated for the treatment of various infectious diseases caused by susceptible pathogens, including pneumonia (especially hospital-acquired pneumonia), urinary tract infections, gynecological infections (such as endometritis and pelvic inflammatory disease), skin and soft tissue infections, meningitis, and septicemia.
Therapeutic drug monitoring of meropenem can help improve treatment efficacy, minimize toxic and adverse effects, and provide valuable data for the diagnosis and management of drug intoxication.
